English Muffins
English Muffins are a staple breakfast item in our household. They are crazy simple to make but also incredibly delicious compare to the ones you purchase at the grocery store. Not only that, making them fresh at home lets you control all the ingredients that are inside of your little English Muffins.
Ingredients (Will make about 6)
300g flour (11.5% protein)
5g cane sugar
5g salt
5g instant dried yeast
1 egg (room temperature)
150ml milk (room temperature
15g softened unsalted butter (room
temperature)
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy and bubbly.
Step 2: Mix the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and softened butter. Mix everything together until a rough dough forms.
Step 3: Knead the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Step 4: First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Step 5: Shape the Dough
Punch down the risen dough to release any air bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it out to a thickness of about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm). Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out rounds from the dough. Place the rounds on a baking sheet that's dusted with flour.
Step 6: Second Rise
Cover the baking sheet with a kitchen towel and let the dough rounds rise for about 30-45 minutes, until they are puffy.
Step 7:Cook the Muffins
Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place the dough rounds onto the skillet (you can cook several at a time) and cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. You can cover the skillet with a lid to help cook the insides. Once cooked, transfer the English muffins to a wire rack to cool.
Step 8: Split and Toast
To serve, use a fork to split the English muffins in half. Toast them in a toaster or on a skillet until they are nicely browned.
Step 9: Enjoy!
Serve the toasted English muffins with butter, jam, honey, or your favorite toppings. They are perfect for breakfast or as a base for eggs Benedict or Peanut Butter and Honey
